Listen to someone ask the way
Press play and follow the conversation. Notice the words Ben uses to give directions: straight ahead, turn left, pass, cross.
Anna: Excuse me! Sorry to bother you - I'm completely lost. How do I get to the train station from here?
Ben: Oh don't worry, it's not far at all! So first, go straight ahead down this road for about five minutes.
Anna: Straight ahead - okay, got it. And then?
Ben: Then you'll reach a big roundabout. Turn left there.
Anna: Left at the roundabout. Is there anything I can look out for so I know I'm going the right way?
Ben: Yes - you'll pass a large supermarket on your right just before the roundabout. That's how you know you're close.
Anna: Perfect, that's really helpful. And is the station easy to find once I turn left?
Ben: Yes, very easy. Cross the street and you'll see a large park. The station is right next to it - you really can't miss it.
Anna: Wonderful. And roughly how long will it take on foot?
Ben: About ten minutes in total from here, maybe a little less.
Anna: That's great - my train leaves in twenty minutes so I should be fine. Thank you so much!
Ben: No problem at all - safe travels!

Give directions out loud
Look at the same city map. Record yourself giving directions from the START point to two different places. Speak as if you are helping a tourist. Try to use: go straight ahead · turn left / right · you'll pass… · cross the street · you can't miss it.
- 1 Give directions from START to the first place.
- 2 Give directions from START to the second place.
- 3 Add one landmark to look out for ("you'll pass…").
